Class Descriptions at the Conservatory
ACROBATICS- In Acrobatics class, dancers are expected to have a background in both Ballet and Jazz dance techniques. Dancers will explore balance and tumbling techniques while working to perfect their technique to master: walkovers, limbers, advanced handsprings, aerials, and partner work. During the progression of their class experience, dancers will develop strength, control and fluidity. Classes are offered to students learning their basic acrobatics skills to more experienced acrobatic dancers.
BALLET- The basis and foundation of all dance forms, Ballet will strengthen and review the fundamentals of technique within dancers' overall training. Ballet class is offered for dancers of all ages and ability--from recreational to students on the pre-professional track. All students, will be challenged technically and artistically.
POINTE- Intermediate and advanced ballet dancers explore the foundations of Pointe work through exercises at the barre and work in the center for advanced level students. Dancers must have strong technical foundations and receive permission from the instructor to take class.
COMBO CLASSES- Combo classes are designed for children ages 3-7. In combo classes, dancers begin to learn the foundations of ballet, jazz, tap, introductory motor skills, rhythm and musicality and coordination while having fun and meeting new friends.
CONTEMPORARY/LYRICAL: Contemporary and lyrical dance explore the styles of ballet, jazz and modern dance as it fuses to exist in the current dance world. Dancers will be challenged to express themselves as artists and grow intellectually as well as physically and technically in contemporary and lyrical classes. All students are encouraged to have experience in one or all of these styles.
BODY STRENGTHENING- This class works on building strength and control while working to increase flexibility and gain better placement and form while executing jumps, turns and a variety of technical skills.
HIP HOP- Hip Hop dancers work to master speed and musicality throughout their class experience. Hip Hop basics are developed during each class. Dancers will work on fun choreography and work with their peers to explore the overall style of Hip Hop dance.
JAZZ- Fundamentals of Jazz dance are explored in traveling steps, isolations, kicks, turns and more. Dancers will focus on body position and placement while learning jazz terminology and choreography. Classes are offered for beginner students to advanced students
MODERN- A conservatory based ideal, modern dance introduces dancers to the fundamentals of this movement style. Dancers will learn parallel placement, contractions, spinal articulation, weight transfer and begin to discover floor work as the basis of the Graham, Limon and Horton techniques.
MUSICAL THEATER- A combination of musical theater jazz combined with acting exercises, basic vocal training, and imagination. Dancers begin to explore the musical theater world. *Dancers must take a Ballet or Jazz class in addition to Musical Theater and it must be level IIA or higher. There will be a one time additional fee*
TAP- In Tap class, dancers learn and perfect rhythm, timing, musicality and precision. Dancers create "music with their feet" as they learn the basics of the tap technique and make rhythms with their feet and the music, sometimes, simultaneously.
